Context
Rural Cycling in the Polish Landscape
Poland has an extensive network of roads classified as drogi gminne and drogi powiatowe — communal and county roads — that pass through agricultural land, forests, and small villages. Many of these carry both motorised and non-motorised traffic without formal separation.
In recent years, regional governments and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) have published guidelines for adding cycling infrastructure to such roads. The challenge is not only technical but administrative: who maintains a path once it is built, and what agreements govern that work.
- Polish road law distinguishes droga rowerowa (dedicated bicycle road) from ciąg pieszo-rowerowy (shared pedestrian-cycling path)
- Sign C-13 marks the beginning of a compulsory bicycle way; C-13a denotes a shared path
- Rural gminas may enter into maintenance agreements (porozumienia komunalne) to pool resources for path upkeep
- EuroVelo routes R-10 and R-9 pass through Polish rural territories with varying surface quality
